MOVING TO SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

We recently moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and after a couple of weeks settling in things are finally calming down. I’ve done some spectacular rides and I’m keen to share some of it with you.

Melissa and I loaded up a Uhaul and started our 3 day road trip to Utah from Kentucky. We planned on driving the 1600 mile journey over 3 days, about 8-9 hours a day. Melissa didn’t want to drive with the trailer so it was up to me. As we approached the end of day two, in Cheyenne CO, we noticed a winter weather storm alert for the following day. Not wanting to get caught up in snow and ice on the roads, we decided to skip our over night hotel in Cheyenne and commit all the way to Utah. This turned out to be a pretty scary experience. The wind gusts were over 75 mph so for hours we drove at a creeping pace. Eventually, after driving for close to 20hrs straight, we reached SLC safely at 1am.

The following day we went and saw the apartment we decided to lease for the first time. We are known for making impulsive decisions, and this was probably yet another one. Signing a lease agreement without seeing the place is risky, but we knew more or less what to expect and luckily, the apartment blew away our expectations. We are super happy with our new home for now. Cullen and Griffin helped us unload our furniture, (thank you once again!!) so our move went smoothly. Of course, after a busy day of unloading and unpacking, nothing tastes better than a take away pizza in a messy apartment. Home!

For the first week it felt like it never stopped snowing. Much to the contrary to when we visited in July mid summer (https://johannvanzyl.cc/cycling-holiday-travel-summer-of-2019/) The city is absolutely beautiful with all the white snow and Christmas lights. This is something completely new to us. In the past, Melissa begged me to take her to some place where it snowed. Well, Melissa, you’re welcome!

Of course, I couldn’t wait to get out on the road. After driving for hours and hours my body felt twisted and blocked, so getting out was my main priority. I layered up and hit Emigration Canyon. It was fresh, but rideable. It felt great to finally move again and climb some mountains. The views were breathtaking. The weather improved over the weekend and the wet roads dried. Griffin and I did a beaut of a ride down south towards Little Cottonwood-Sunny and back.

Now that we’ve settled in we’ve had more time to get back to exploring the city. We went up to Park City for a day. I definitely need to invest in some ski’s so that I can join in on that party. We also had delicious bratwurst and hot chocolate at the German Christmas market at the Heritage Park. There are so many things and places we need to visit and experience! If you know of any, drop a comment!

I’ll try my best to keep you updated every once and a while. I hope you all have a great weekend!
