VENICE, ITALY - 2018

Here’s a quick post about our quick 2-night trip to Venice.

It was my wife’s birthday over the weekend so I thought what better way to spend it than a surpirse trip to Venice. Neither of us have been there before which made it even more exciting. I planned my training schedule accordingly so that I’ll have a ‘taper’ block during this period, so riding was not a worry. Traveling without the hassle of a bike also makes it a lot more enjoyable and stress-free. It’s almost time for the first training camp of the year and after that the season basically begins. So one last getaway.

After a quick hop from Barcelona to Venice Marco Polo Airport, we arrived pretty late Friday night. Hungry, and tired, the hotel receptionist recommended the restaurant Vino Vino. It was past 23:00 already so options were few. It was a little gem though. A great glass of Barolo and some pasta to get us straight in the Italian vibe.

We stayed at the Baglioni Hotel Luna in the San Marco district. Perfect location as all of the shops and restaurants are nearby. Actually, it’s Venice, so they can’t be too far away anyway. Beautifully decorated and a very elegant hotel. Highly recommended. I also loved their wide spread breakfast buffet. Crostata. Need I say more?

We basically had one day to do our exploring. After sleeping in and topping up on crostatas we hit the streets. It was even more beautiful than I expected it to be. Some people who have been there before told us it’s a bit overrated. The only overrated thing we had was a (€10) cappucino at Cafe Florian. It is located in the Piazza San Marco so I guess the location adds to the bill. But, the coffee itself wasn’t special at all.

We stopped for lunch at Al Chianti. A small, local restaurant.

The highlight of the trip was probably dinner Saturday night. We made reservations at another restaurant actually, but decided to stroll through town and see if we find something better on the way. We did, Osteria Enoteca San Marco. We were lucky to get the last available table. The food and service were outstanding and we’ll definitely revisit if we ever find ourselves in Venice again.

The next morning we were up early to catch our flight back home at 09:00. This time we took the easier travel option and took a waterboat taxi which picked us up right at the hotel entrance. Instead of the 1hr15 ferry trip, we were there in less than 30mins.

It was a great getaway trip. We love traveling and seeing places. If you haven’t seen Venice, add it to your ‘places to see’ list.

Ciao
